Canceling Flock is on the Santa Cruz City Council agenda tomorrow, Tuesday, January 13th between 3:30pm–5pm!
BACKGROUND:
Santa Cruz City Council will hold a vote to terminate the Flock contract and discontinue using these mass surveillance tracking cameras that target immigrants and vulnerable others. ICE has already used this data to track and arrest people.
While we support cancelling the Flock contract, we should let Council know that we do not approve of another ALPR system coming into our community.

SCRIPT SUGGESTIONS (choose one or write your own)
Terminate Flock Safety Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) Contract; Cease ALPR Use; Direct Conditional Return Only if a Fully Vetted, Values-Aligned ALPR Alternative is Identified
Please vote in favor of the resolution to cancel the contract with Flock Safety, because mass surveillance is NOT safety, and the people of Santa Cruz have not been consulted.
I do not approve of another ALPR system coming into our city. While voting for cancellation, please do not immediately vote to contract with another ALPR company.
24/7 ALPR cameras involve mass unwarranted surveillance, violate the Fourth Amendment, are being litigated, and have not been ruled as constitutional. I urge you to engage the community in a deeper dialogue around mass surveillance, the Fourth Amendment and consensual forms of crime prevention before considering another contract with any companies that provide surveillance technology or automated license plate readers.
